My Children Will Do It Differently
Reverb Day 2: If you could choose one thing that your children will do or experience in a different way than you have, what would it be and why?
I have two children, a senior in high school and a sophomore in college. As I write this, I’m thinking of everything I should be doing like lesson plans, laundry, holiday shopping, paying bills, and all the other routine tasks that take so much time away from those we love and the things we most enjoy doing. I feel guilty devoting time to this blog post when my lawn is covered in leaves and I have no clue what I’m doing next week in my classroom.
This is no way to live.
If there is one thing I want my kids to experience differently it’s the joy of doing what you want to do without the insistent pressure of what you should be doing. My daughter loves art yet in our world so few support themselves as artists. My son is a drummer and loves music yet so few musicians make a workable wage doing what they love.
I hope my kids don’t take the job and make the decisions they have to make only to survive; I hope they follow their passion, find love in their lives and the time to enjoy it, and live in a world that recognizes that an artist has as much value as a scientist.
My kids won’t be trapped in that hallway. My kids will reach the sky.

I wish I had travelled more when I could afford it and before I had obligations. I’m not giving up, though, the time will come. But for my son, I hope he takes the time to see the world, experience places and cultures unlike his own before settling down with a “real” job. I hope he has someone fun to travel with, too (like me!)
I hope so, too. They have one incredible ally on their side in you.
The world needs more Moms like you!
I can relate both to your guilt, as well as to your creative children.
Sadly, I was made to feel wrong about my creativity as a kid. Took me a long time to get over it. Bleh!
Keep up the good work, and – hey – I am writing you a permission slip to do whatever you want … Cash it in when you desire. It never expires!
See you tomorrow!
